What is the difference between I²C and SPI on the 1.3" OLED display?

The 1.3" OLED display supports I²C as well as 3-wire and 4-wire SPI. It ships set to 4-wire SPI. I²C: only two data lines (SDA, SCL), easier to wire, but slower; SPI: more pins, but higher refresh rates, relevant for animated content.

How do I switch the 1.3" OLED display to I²C?

The interface is selected with the solder jumpers IM0 and IM1 on the back. The table is printed on the PCB: 4-wire SPI (factory setting): IM1 = 0, IM0 = 0; I²C: IM1 = 1, IM0 = 0; 3-wire SPI: IM1 = 0, IM0 = 1. For I²C, only move the 0 Ω resistor at IM1 from position 0 to 1. In I²C mode, CS is tied to GND and DIN is SDA. A0 sets the address: 0x3C when tied to GND, 0x3D when tied to 3.3V. SDA and SCL need pull-up resistors (typ. 4.7 kΩ).

Which bitmap graphics library works with the 1.3" OLED display (SH1106)?

The 1.3" OLED display uses the SH1106 driver, not the SSD1306. A pure SSD1306 library is therefore not directly compatible: the image is shifted by 2 pixels and noise appears at the edge, because the SH1106 has a 132-column memory. Suitable are libraries with SH1106 support that can be used on ESP32, STM32, Arduino and Teensy, e.g.: U8g2 (I²C and SPI); Adafruit SH110X (combined with Adafruit GFX).

What is the difference from the 0.96" OLED display (K40054)?

Both OLED displays have the same resolution (128×64 pixels), but the 1.3" OLED display has a larger display area. Text and graphics are easier to read. The key difference is the driver IC: the 0.96" OLED display (K40054) uses an SSD1306, the 1.3" OLED display an SH1106. This requires a different library configuration.

How much current does the 1.3" OLED display draw?

The current draw depends on the image content. According to the datasheet (at 3.3V supply): 50% of the area lit: typ. 25 mA (max. 30 mA); 100% of the area lit: typ. 45 mA (max. 50 mA); Sleep mode: typ. 2 µA. This is well above the current draw of the 0.96" OLED display.

The 1.3" OLED display pulses at 3.3V, what can I do?

The 1.3" OLED display is rated for 2.5 to 5.5V. In SPI mode, the image can pulse slightly at 3.3V (roughly once per second). With 5V on VCC it stays steady. Before switching to 5V: first connect only VCC and GND; measure the signal pins (SCL, DIN, RES, A0, CS) against GND: none of them may show about 5V. According to the datasheet, the signal inputs are only rated up to 3.6V, and the GPIOs of an ESP32 are not 5V tolerant.

Why are lines on an OLED display sometimes slightly darker?

The 1.3" OLED display uses passive matrix technology. The rows are driven one after another (multiplexing, here 1/64). The more pixels of a row are lit at the same time, the darker the entire row becomes. This is normal behavior of this technology and not a defect. On the 1.3" OLED display (current draw up to approx. 50 mA) it is more noticeable than on the 0.96" OLED display. Ways to reduce the effect: Distribute graphics and content so that not many pixels of the same row are lit (e.g. lines or grids instead of filled areas); Adjust the contrast of the OLED display in software.

Can I run the 1.3" OLED display on an ESP32 or Arduino?

Yes. The 1.3" OLED display is controlled via SPI or I²C and can be run on microcontrollers such as ESP32, STM32, Arduino and Teensy. It is powered with 2.5 to 5.5V. According to the datasheet, the signal inputs are rated for a maximum of 3.6V: on 3.3V boards such as the ESP32, the OLED display can be connected directly; on 5V boards such as the Arduino Uno, a level shifter is required. Test script for the ESP32

A ready-made Arduino sketch is available for a first test.
It checks the display with 17 tests, including resolution, fonts, symbols, graphics, contrast, rotation and transfer speed, and also reports every step on the serial console.
